Locoregional therapies represent an important tool in the treatment of liver metastases that are currently used to palliate symptoms, control disease, and in some cancers, have been shown to prolong survival. The goal of ablation is to treat the tumor and a margin of tissue around it.

In general, ablation therapy achieves the best results when applied by an experienced surgeon. It may be considered an alternative or complement to surgery and, in some instances, is considered a potentially curative intervention.
