Objectives

The lessons will focus on the following learning objectives:

  • to know the ultrasound physics and technology
  • to identify the sonographic patterns of different tissues
  • to recognize and explain common artefacts
  • to describe ultrasound images using adequate vocabulary
  • to select appropriate transducers and equipment settings
  • to know the frequencies used in medical ultrasound and the effects on image quality and penetration

At the end of this module 1 the clinician will become familiar with ultrasound machines.

Lessons

Physical principles of US wave

Diagnostic medical sonography is an imaging technique in which high frequency acoustic energy is transmitted into the body using a transducer in contact with the skin. The ultrasound wave is reflected from tissue interfaces of different densities.

20 min Paul Magotteaux

US tissue interactions

The objectives of this lesson is to understand transmission of ultrasound through tissues, the interactions of ultrasound wave with body tissues.

16 min Paul Magotteaux

Ultrasound artefacts

In this lesson the common ultrasound artefacts and their significance in diagnostic imaging will be discussed.

18 min Paul Magotteaux

Description of US Imaging Adequate Terminology

The objectives of this lesson are to understand the basic ultrasound imaging terminology and to observe the normal echogenicity patterns related to different organs and tissues

The terminology used to describe ultrasound findings is the description of the brightness of the structure.
